Black Hawk Automobile Museum

I have been there before, perhaps 3 or 4 times already. There were fewer this time, missing several Ferraris that I had sen in the past. Also prominently missing were the classic BMWs.

I have been to the museum in Reno and Vegas, and Black Hawk is by far the best one.

There were some new cars that I had not seen there before. A good looking VW van. Three very futuristic looking Fiat cars. A Road Runner. And a few others I'm sure.

In regards to the photographs. I did not bring a flash, on purpose. Everything was done with the f/1.4 and f/2.8 lenses. The challenge here was not necessarily low light. Meaning yes, I was using 2.8 and 1.4 combined with low shutter speeds but that was manageable. The problem was that the museum uses spot lights. Becuase of this the amount of light on a given automobile is not even from one end to the other. In fact the areas that have light falling directly on them can be completely blown out and other areas be almost in complete darkness.

Take this MB for example. I had to do a lot of Fill Light and other adjustments to make it look like this. Not bad after all but the image quality is hurting on some of the darker areas.

This other one for example from a BUGATTI was beyond any help on the blown out areas.

  1. Nice pics! I'll have to make a trip out there sometime and attempt some pictures as well. Maybe I'll try it with a flash, if it's allowed.
